Big trip, small car: what should I bring?!
Going away overnight or even for a few weeks is one thing; really moving house is quite another. Moving into a dorm is somewhere in between. It’s a home away from home for long periods of time, but it’s still temporary. At the end of the academic year, you have to pack it all up and move it again.
So — you don’t want to bring everything you own
. In a way, the question is “what should I leave at home?”

There’s nothing like being able to picture what you want to do and make it happen. That goes for all kinds of projects — whether it’s writing a paper, doing a math assignment, or hanging a picture. Having the right tools makes it way, way easier. Tools are empowering, and succeeding at what you set out to do makes you feel great.
At the very least, here’s what you’ll need on-hand to manage basic projects in your dorm room.
- Phillips screwdriver
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Pliers
- Adjustable wrench (and not one of those miniature ones, either!)
- Picture-hanging supplies (there will probably be guidelines on what to use in your dorm; make sure to follow these)
- Hammer (not too wimpy, please)
- Level
- Tape measure
